A genuinely calming activity that needs one sheet of paper and produces data they can compare week to week.

Ce qu’il vous faut

  • paper
  • pencil

Comment faire

  1. Rule a sheet of paper into two columns: what I saw, and how many.
  2. Sit at a window with a clear view of a garden, a tree or a street.
  3. Watch for fifteen minutes, marking a tally for every bird.
  4. Do not worry about naming them. Big brown one is a perfectly good entry.
  5. Repeat at the same time next week and compare the totals.

Pourquoi c’est bon pour eux

Sustained quiet observation is a skill that almost nothing else in modern childhood practises. The tally chart turns waiting into data collection, which gives a restless child a reason to stay still.
