Fifteen minutes of work that turns into six weeks of daily checking.

What you need

  • a pot
  • compost
  • fast seeds such as cress
  • beans or sunflowers
  • a small watering can

How to do it

  1. Fill a pot with compost, letting them do the scooping.
  2. Make holes with a finger and drop the seeds in.
  3. Cover, water lightly, and put it on a windowsill.
  4. Mark the date on a label stuck in the pot.
  5. Check every morning and measure the height once it appears.

Why this is good for them

The gap between effort and result is the whole point. Very little else in a childs life takes three weeks to produce anything, and learning that some things cannot be hurried is genuinely useful. Measuring weekly adds real data collection.

Adapting by age

2 to 4 yearsUse cress on damp kitchen paper. It sprouts in days, which suits a shorter attention span.
9 to 12 yearsPlant four pots and vary one thing each: light, water, depth, warmth.

Keep it safe

Wash hands after handling compost. Check that any seeds used are non-toxic.

Cleanup tip

Do the filling outside or over a tray.
