What you need
- a pot
- compost
- fast seeds such as cress
- beans or sunflowers
- a small watering can
How to do it
- Fill a pot with compost, letting them do the scooping.
- Make holes with a finger and drop the seeds in.
- Cover, water lightly, and put it on a windowsill.
- Mark the date on a label stuck in the pot.
- Check every morning and measure the height once it appears.
Why this is good for them
The gap between effort and result is the whole point. Very little else in a childs life takes three weeks to produce anything, and learning that some things cannot be hurried is genuinely useful. Measuring weekly adds real data collection.
Adapting by age
2 to 4 yearsUse cress on damp kitchen paper. It sprouts in days, which suits a shorter attention span.
9 to 12 yearsPlant four pots and vary one thing each: light, water, depth, warmth.
Keep it safe
Wash hands after handling compost. Check that any seeds used are non-toxic.
Cleanup tip
Do the filling outside or over a tray.
