The Odd Sock Challenge
A real job, done properly, by someone who is four.
Hand over the odd sock basket. It is genuinely useful, and children take it seriously.
What you need
- a basket of unmatched socks
How to do it
- Tip the odd sock basket onto the floor.
- Ask them to find every pair they can.
- Line the true singles up separately at the end.
- Count how many pairs they found.
- Let them decide what happens to the socks with no partner.
Why this is good for them
Matching by multiple attributes at once, colour and size and pattern, is more cognitively demanding than it appears. The reason children stay with it is that the job is real, and being genuinely useful matters enormously to them at this age.
Adapting by age
3 to 4 yearsPre-sort to twenty socks and use obviously different colours.
7 to 10 yearsTime them, then challenge them to beat it next week.
