The most open-ended activity there is. Hand over a large box and genuinely say nothing else.

What you need

  • a large cardboard box
  • masking tape
  • crayons or markers

How to do it

  1. Find the largest box you have. Delivery boxes are ideal.
  2. Put it in the middle of the floor with tape and markers next to it.
  3. Say nothing about what it could be.
  4. If they ask what to make, ask what they think it looks like already.
  5. Leave it out for several days rather than breaking it down that evening.

Why this is good for them

Open-ended materials produce longer, richer play than toys with a fixed purpose, and boxes are the clearest example. Resisting the urge to suggest a spaceship is the hard part for the adult, and it is the part that matters.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsCut a door and a window yourself. That is enough of a prompt.
9 to 12 yearsAdd a challenge: it has to hold your weight, or it has to have a working door.

Keep it safe

Adult does all the cutting. Remove staples from box corners before handing it over.

Cleanup tip

Flatten it for recycling only once they have genuinely finished with it.
