A folding puzzle that becomes a game, and it fits in a pocket for the journey home.

What you need

  • square paper
  • pens

How to do it

  1. Start with a square sheet and fold all four corners into the centre.
  2. Turn it over and fold the four new corners in again.
  3. Fold in half, then work your fingers into the four pockets.
  4. Write numbers on the outside flaps and messages underneath.
  5. Play it on each other, then make a second one with better messages.

Why this is good for them

The folding sequence is precise, multi-step work that has to be done in the right order, which is excellent fine-motor and sequencing practice. Writing the eight messages is a small, contained piece of creative writing that never feels like writing.

Adapting by age

5 to 6 yearsYou fold it, they decorate and write.
11 to 12 yearsUse it as a quiz with real questions rather than fortunes.
