- Agree the rule: the story must start in box one and finish in box six.
- Plan roughly what happens in each box before drawing anything.
- Draw it, adding speech bubbles.
- Read it aloud to someone at the end.

Six boxes forces a beginning, a middle and an end, which is exactly the structure children struggle to hold when writing freely. Because the constraint comes from the paper rather than from an adult, it does not feel like a rule.
