The comedy of watching an adult follow their instructions literally is where the learning happens.

What you need

  • paper
  • pen
  • sandwich ingredients

How to do it

  1. They invent a sandwich and write the recipe as numbered steps.
  2. You then follow it exactly and literally, with no interpretation at all.
  3. If it says put the butter on the bread, put the tub on the loaf.
  4. Let them rewrite the steps that failed.
  5. Follow version two and eat the result.

Why this is good for them

Following instructions with deliberate literalness shows a child exactly where their writing was ambiguous, and it is far more effective than any correction you could offer. Rewriting for precision is the whole exercise.

Adapting by age

4 to 5 yearsThey dictate the steps and you write them down, then follow them.
11 to 12 yearsAdd quantities and timings, and require it to serve four.

Keep it safe

Cleanup tip

Eating the evidence covers most of it.
