Twenty minutes, needs nothing, and it changes the atmosphere of a difficult day.

What you need

Nothing at all.

How to do it

  1. Everyone secretly draws the name of another person in the house.
  2. Over the next hour, do one useful thing for that person without them noticing.
  3. Make their bed, tidy their shoes, leave a note, put their book back.
  4. At dinner, everyone guesses who did what for them.
  5. Reveal the names at the end.

Why this is good for them

Doing something helpful without receiving credit for it separates kindness from praise-seeking, which is a distinction young children find genuinely difficult. Working out what a specific person would actually appreciate is also real perspective-taking.

Adapting by age

4 to 5 yearsTell them one specific thing to do secretly rather than leaving it open.
11 to 12 yearsExtend it to a whole week, with one act a day and no reveal at all.

Keep it safe

Agree that nobody enters anyone elses room without permission.
