The fastest way to turn restless energy into laughter, and better for self-control than it looks.

What you need

  • anything that plays music

How to do it

  1. Clear a space and put music on.
  2. Everyone dances until you pause the music.
  3. When it stops, everyone freezes in position.
  4. Anyone who moves does a silly forfeit rather than being out.
  5. Let a child control the music for the last few rounds.

Why this is good for them

Stopping a body mid-movement on an external signal is inhibitory control, one of the core executive functions and a strong predictor of later classroom readiness. It is also genuinely tiring, which is the other reason to use it.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsForget the freezing rule. Just dance and stop together.
6 to 10 yearsFreeze in a specific shape: an animal, a letter, a statue.

Keep it safe

Clear furniture corners and play in socks or bare feet rather than slippery tights.

Cleanup tip

Push the furniture back as the final round.
