Deceptively difficult, and it turns concentration into a game.

What you need

  • a spoon each
  • a small potato or a ball

How to do it

  1. Give everyone a spoon with a small potato balanced on it.
  2. Mark a start and a finish.
  3. Walk, do not run. Dropping it means going back to the start.
  4. Do it three times so the first loss is not the only one.
  5. Try it walking backwards for the final round.

Why this is good for them

Moving deliberately slowly is genuinely hard for an excited child, and this is one of the few games that rewards it. It requires continuous small balance corrections, which is exactly the kind of motor control that develops through practice rather than instruction.

Adapting by age

3 to 4 yearsA large spoon and a short distance. Allow a steadying finger.
9 to 12 yearsAdd a turn, a step over a cushion, or use a teaspoon.

Keep it safe

Use a potato or a ball rather than a real egg indoors.

Cleanup tip

Spoon in the sink, potato back in the cupboard.
