A short creative activity with a small act of kindness at the end of it.

What you need

  • smooth stones
  • acrylic or poster paint
  • brushes
  • newspaper

How to do it

  1. Collect smooth stones on a walk, or use ones from the garden.
  2. Wash and dry them completely.
  3. Cover the table with newspaper and paint the stones.
  4. Let them dry properly overnight.
  5. Leave them on a wall or a park bench for someone else to find.

Why this is good for them

The painting is ordinary craft work. The part that matters is leaving it for a stranger with no expectation of thanks, which is one of the simplest ways to make generosity concrete for a young child.

Adapting by age

3 to 4 yearsOne colour per stone. Do not aim for a picture.
9 to 12 yearsPaint a short message or a small illustration on the back.

Keep it safe

Use non-toxic paint. Wash hands afterwards. Do not leave painted stones in nature reserves or on beaches where they may be treated as litter.

Cleanup tip

Newspaper down first, and brushes into a jar of water immediately.
