A brilliant two-child activity that turns building into a lesson in speaking precisely.

What you need

  • building bricks
  • a large book or box as a barrier

How to do it

  1. Give each child an identical set of ten to fifteen bricks.
  2. Sit them back to back, or put a barrier between them.
  3. One builds something small and then describes it so the other can copy it.
  4. No looking, no gestures, words only.
  5. Compare the two builds, then swap roles.

Why this is good for them

When the copy comes out wrong, the reason is almost always an imprecise instruction, and children discover that themselves. It is the clearest demonstration of why words like on top of, behind and to the left of actually matter.

Adapting by age

5 to 6 yearsSix bricks maximum, all different colours.
11 to 12 yearsThe builder may only answer yes or no to questions.

Keep it safe

Small bricks are a choking hazard around under-threes.

Cleanup tip

Bricks back in the box between rounds keeps the sets from mixing.
