Learn to Juggle

Start with one scarf. Most people never get past two, and that is fine.

A skill that improves visibly within twenty minutes, which is unusual and very motivating.

What you need

  • three light scarves or plastic bags
  • or three rolled socks

How to do it

  1. Start with one scarf. Throw it from one hand to the other, high.
  2. Do that fifty times before adding anything.
  3. Add a second scarf and throw the second as the first reaches its peak.
  4. Practise two until it is boring.
  5. Only then add the third.

Why this is good for them

Juggling forces a child to slow down and master a stage before moving on, and the temptation to skip to three is enormous. Scarves fall slowly, which makes the timing achievable and keeps early failure from being discouraging.

Adapting by age

5 to 6 yearsOne scarf only. Throw and catch is a real achievement.
11 to 12 yearsMove to balls once two scarves are reliable.

Keep it safe

Plastic bags are a suffocation risk. Use scarves or socks with young children in the house.

Cleanup tip

Three items, one drawer.
