A rainy day plan that actually holds up

Updated July 26, 2026

Rain, a small home, and a child with a full tank of energy is the hardest combination in parenting. Here is a plan for the whole day rather than a list you have to keep choosing from while everyone gets crosser.

Work in blocks, not activities

The common mistake is treating a wet day as a series of activities to get through. That turns you into a full-time entertainment officer and it fails by eleven in the morning.

A better structure is four blocks, each with a deliberately different energy level. The reason this works is simple: a child who has not moved cannot then sit still and concentrate, and a child who has been running for an hour cannot go straight to bed.

Morning: burn energy first

Do not start with crafts. Start with movement, because everything afterwards depends on it.

A cushion obstacle course through the living room. Sock basketball into a laundry basket. A pillowcase race down the hallway. Balloon keepy-uppy. Freeze dance with someone else controlling the music.

Twenty to thirty minutes of genuine physical effort is achievable in a surprisingly small space, and it changes the entire rest of the day.

Late morning: one long project

Once the energy is off, this is the best window in the day for something absorbing.

A blanket fort. A large cardboard box with tape and markers and no instructions. A marble run taped to a wall from cut cardboard tubes. A giant sheet of paper taped flat to the floor. Salt dough.

Pick one thing and let it run as long as it holds. Do not queue up a second activity behind it, because knowing something else is coming shortens the first one.

After lunch: quiet and contained

This is the lowest point of a wet day for everyone in the house. Aim low deliberately.

A reading nook built from cushions. A memory tray. A card house. Name that sound with eyes closed. A feely bag.

Warm water play in a washing-up bowl on a towel is unreasonably effective here for younger children, and it is calming rather than stimulating, which is the direction you want at this hour.

Late afternoon: movement again, then wind down

Another short burst of physical activity, then something genuinely calming before the evening.

Shadow puppets on a wall with a torch. Animal stretches on the floor. Five minutes of deliberate silence where everyone says one thing they heard. A story circle passing a torch around.

Skipping the wind-down block is the most common reason a rainy day ends in a bad bedtime.

Four things that make a wet day easier

Go outside anyway. Twenty minutes in the rain with wellies changes the whole day, and it is the single highest-value thing on this page. Measuring puddle depths with a marked stick turns the weather into the activity rather than the obstacle.

Leave one thing set up. A fort or a box that stays up all day gets returned to four or five times, and each return is longer than the last. Dismantling it after an hour because the room looks untidy throws away most of its value.

Give them a real job. Sorting laundry, matching container lids, washing plastic dishes, helping cook something you will actually eat. Young children take genuine household work seriously in a way they do not take invented tasks.

Lower the standard for the house. A wet day with children indoors will produce mess. Deciding in advance that the living room will be reset at five, once, rather than continuously, removes an enormous amount of friction.

If there are two children

Wet days magnify sibling friction because there is nowhere to escape to. Two things help: build in one activity where they have different roles rather than the same job, and protect twenty minutes where they are deliberately apart doing separate things. The separation is not a punishment and should not be framed as one.

The realistic version

You will not run all four blocks perfectly, and some of the day will be a screen. That is fine.

The aim is that the day has a shape rather than being one long negotiation punctuated by you thinking of things. Even two of the four blocks landing well is a considerably better day than none.

Our weekly planner will build a balanced day or week automatically, balancing energy across the slots and keeping several days no-supplies, and you can print it for the fridge.
