A calm, contained activity for late afternoon or the tail end of a sick day.

What you need

  • cushions
  • a blanket
  • a torch
  • books

How to do it

  1. Pick a corner, ideally one that is already a bit enclosed.
  2. Let them arrange the cushions and blanket exactly how they want.
  3. Add a torch and a small stack of books they choose themselves.
  4. Agree it is a quiet space, and leave them in it.
  5. Join them for the last ten minutes and read together.

Why this is good for them

Giving a child ownership over where they read matters more than which book they pick. Enclosed, dim spaces lower arousal, which is why this works well when a child is overtired but resisting rest.

Adapting by age

3 to 4 yearsSit with them and read aloud. The nook is the novelty.
10 to 12 yearsLet them keep it up for a week and use it as a homework spot.

Keep it safe

Battery torches only, never candles. Keep it clear of heaters.

Cleanup tip

Leave it up if you can. The second and third visits are the valuable ones.
