A dim room and a torch is all you need. Naturally calming, which makes it a good pre-bedtime option.

What you need

  • a torch or phone light
  • a blank wall

How to do it

  1. Dim the lights and shine a torch at a blank wall.
  2. Make a simple shape first: a dog with your hand, or a bird.
  3. Let them try, and let the shapes be unrecognisable at first.
  4. Once they have two animals, tell a short story with them.
  5. Finish with everyone lying down watching one slow, quiet story.

Why this is good for them

Low light lowers arousal, which is why this works when a child is overtired. Forming specific hand shapes is also genuine fine-motor practice, and the storytelling turns it into language work without feeling like it.

Adapting by age

3 to 4 yearsYou make the shapes, they guess what they are.
8 to 12 yearsCut card silhouettes on sticks and stage a proper short play.

Keep it safe

Torches only. No candles, no uncovered lamps.

Cleanup tip

None.
