Ten minutes of movement in a dark room, and it works brilliantly on winter evenings.

What you need

  • a torch

How to do it

  1. Clear the floor and turn the lights off, keeping the room safe to move in.
  2. Shine a torch spot onto the floor or wall.
  3. They chase and try to stamp on or touch the spot.
  4. Move it slowly, then quickly, then make it disappear.
  5. Swap and let them hold the torch.

Why this is good for them

Chasing a moving light is intensive visual tracking combined with whole-body movement, and children find it much more compelling than a ball. Holding the torch themselves adds the harder task of controlling something at a distance.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsKeep the spot slow and low, and leave a lamp on.
7 to 10 yearsTwo torches, one each, and try to catch the other persons spot.

Keep it safe

Never shine a torch in eyes. Clear the floor completely before turning the lights off.

Cleanup tip

Lights on, furniture back.
