Almost nothing else demands this much steady, quiet concentration from a nine year old.

What you need

  • a deck of playing cards

How to do it

  1. Find a flat surface with no draught and no passing traffic.
  2. Lean two cards against each other to make the first triangle.
  3. Build a row of triangles, then lay cards flat across the top.
  4. Start the next storey on that platform.
  5. Count the storeys, photograph it, then knock it down deliberately.

Why this is good for them

This requires sustained fine control and a very slow hand, and it collapses often enough to be a genuine test of frustration tolerance. Knocking it down on purpose at the end gives the child control over the ending, which makes the collapses easier to bear.

Adapting by age

5 to 6 yearsBend the cards slightly, which makes a simple structure achievable.
11 to 12 yearsThree storeys minimum, or build it on a slightly uneven surface.

Keep it safe

None needed.

Cleanup tip

Cards back in the box.
