Build a Card House
One deck of cards and enormous patience.
Almost nothing else demands this much steady, quiet concentration from a nine year old.
What you need
- a deck of playing cards
How to do it
- Find a flat surface with no draught and no passing traffic.
- Lean two cards against each other to make the first triangle.
- Build a row of triangles, then lay cards flat across the top.
- Start the next storey on that platform.
- Count the storeys, photograph it, then knock it down deliberately.
Why this is good for them
This requires sustained fine control and a very slow hand, and it collapses often enough to be a genuine test of frustration tolerance. Knocking it down on purpose at the end gives the child control over the ending, which makes the collapses easier to bear.
Adapting by age
5 to 6 yearsBend the cards slightly, which makes a simple structure achievable.
