How to do it
- Build a fort large enough for everyone who wants to be in it.
- Bring in cushions, a blanket each, and a torch.
- Everyone chooses one book or one story to share.
- Read by torchlight, taking turns.
- Finish with the torch off and one story told from memory in the dark.
Why this is good for them
The build burns off the last of the evening energy and the enclosed, dim space then lowers arousal naturally. Ending in complete darkness with a spoken story is a much gentler transition to bed than closing a book under a bright light.
