Stack anything you have into the tallest tower it will make, then let them demolish it. Repeat until they lose interest.

What you need

  • blocks
  • cups
  • books or empty boxes

How to do it

  1. Gather anything stackable: blocks, plastic cups, board books, empty food boxes.
  2. Build a tower together, naming each piece as it goes on.
  3. Count to three out loud, then let them knock it over.
  4. Rebuild. The repetition is the learning, not a failure of imagination.
  5. Try a challenge: can we get to ten pieces before it falls?

Why this is good for them

This is a childs first physics lesson. Stacking teaches balance, cause and effect, and the beginnings of planning. The countdown before the knock builds anticipation control, which is early self-regulation.

Adapting by age

12 to 24 monthsTwo or three large blocks is a real achievement. Celebrate it.
3 to 4 yearsAdd a rule: only one hand allowed, or build it on a cushion.

Keep it safe

Keep towers below head height and use soft or light items for the youngest children.

Cleanup tip

Make the tidy-up part of the game by racing to see who can put more pieces back in the box.
