Set it up once and they will run it twenty times trying to shave off seconds.

What you need

  • garden chairs
  • a rope or skipping rope
  • buckets
  • a ball
  • chalk

How to do it

  1. Set six stations around the garden: weave, crawl, jump, throw, balance, sprint.
  2. Walk the course together once so the order is clear.
  3. Time each run and write the times down.
  4. Let them try to beat their own time, not each others.
  5. After a few runs, let them redesign one station.

Why this is good for them

Beating a personal time rather than another child keeps effort high without the social cost of losing, and it makes improvement visible. Redesigning a station adds planning to what is otherwise purely physical.

Adapting by age

3 to 4 yearsThree stations, no timing, and run it alongside them.
11 to 12 yearsAdd a penalty system and a carrying task that punishes rushing.

Keep it safe

Check for trip hazards and keep stations away from hard edges and glass.

Cleanup tip

Dismantling is quick if you photograph the layout first.
