Dry rice in a shallow tray with cups and spoons keeps toddlers scooping, pouring and sorting for far longer than you expect.

What you need

  • dry rice or pasta
  • shallow tray or washing-up bowl
  • cups
  • spoons

How to do it

  1. Pour dry rice into a shallow tray until it is about three centimetres deep.
  2. Add cups, spoons, a small funnel and anything that scoops.
  3. Put the tray on a towel or an old sheet so spills gather in one place.
  4. Sit nearby but let them lead. Resist the urge to demonstrate.
  5. Give a two-minute warning before you finish so the ending is not a surprise.

Why this is good for them

Scooping and pouring builds the pincer grip and wrist rotation that later become pencil control. The steady, repetitive motion is also genuinely calming, which is why this works well after a difficult morning.

Adapting by age

18 months to 2 yearsUse larger cups and expect rice everywhere. Supervise closely for mouthing.
3 to 4 yearsHide small objects in the rice and give them a list to find.

Keep it safe

Stay within arm reach of children under three. Dry rice is a choking risk if mouthed. Not suitable if your child still mouths everything.

Cleanup tip

Lay an old bedsheet under the tray first. Lift the corners and pour the spilled rice straight back in.
