You give three random words. They build a story around them.

A pure imagination game that needs nothing at all and works in a car, a queue, or at bedtime.

What you need

Nothing at all.

How to do it

  1. Pick three unrelated words: for example dragon, spoon, and Tuesday.
  2. They start a story that must use all three.
  3. After a minute, take over and continue it.
  4. Hand it back, adding one new word they must include.
  5. Finish the story properly rather than letting it trail off.

Why this is good for them

Improvised storytelling builds narrative structure, which is the single strongest predictor of later writing ability. Constraints help rather than hinder, because a completely open invitation to make something up is intimidating for most children.

Adapting by age

4 to 6 yearsUse two familiar words and let it be silly. Nonsense is fine.
9 to 12 yearsAdd a rule: it must end sadly, or it must be told backwards.

Keep it safe

None needed.

Cleanup tip

None.
