A verbal game that needs nothing, works in a car or a queue, and is real phonics practice.

What you need

Nothing at all.

How to do it

  1. Say a simple word: cat.
  2. Take turns adding a word that rhymes.
  3. Nonsense words are allowed and should be encouraged.
  4. When nobody can think of another, whoever said the last one picks the next starting word.
  5. Try a harder starting word once they are confident: orange never works, which is funny.

Why this is good for them

Hearing that words share an ending sound is phonological awareness, and it is one of the strongest predictors of how easily a child learns to read. Allowing nonsense words matters, because it proves they are working with sound rather than meaning.

Adapting by age

3 to 4 yearsYou say two rhyming words and ask if they sound the same.
7 to 9 yearsRequire real words only, or rhymes with two syllables.

Keep it safe

None needed.

Cleanup tip

None.
