Set up a small washing station with warm water and unbreakable dishes. One of the most reliably absorbing toddler activities there is.
What you need
- washing-up bowl
- warm water
- a little soap
- plastic cups and plates
- tea towel
How to do it
- Half fill a bowl with warm water and a small squeeze of soap.
- Put it on a towel on the floor, or on a low chair.
- Add plastic cups, plates and a small brush.
- Roll their sleeves up and let them wash everything, twice.
- Give them a tea towel at the end so drying becomes part of the game.
Why this is good for them
Warm water is regulating for an overstimulated nervous system, which is why this works so well in the late afternoon. Washing also gives a toddler something genuinely useful to do, and that sense of contribution matters more to them than we assume.

Keep it safe
Never leave a child alone with standing water, even a shallow bowl. Test the temperature yourself first.
