What you need
- a wooden crate or sturdy box
- hollow stems or cardboard tubes
- pine cones
- dry leaves
- small sticks
How to do it
- Find a box or crate and put it on its side in a sheltered spot.
- Collect hollow stems, sticks, pine cones and dry leaves.
- Pack them into the box in dense layers, leaving lots of small gaps.
- Fill it tightly so nothing falls out in wind.
- Check it every week or two and record what has moved in.
Why this is good for them
Building habitat rather than catching insects reframes the relationship: the child provides something and then observes what happens, with no control over the outcome. That waiting and checking is a slower, more patient kind of science.
Adapting by age

Keep it safe
