A five minute listening game that needs nothing and works in any room of the house.

What you need

Nothing at all.

How to do it

  1. They sit with eyes closed.
  2. Make a sound: crumple paper, tap a mug, zip a coat, pour water.
  3. They guess what it was.
  4. Give the real answer and let them try the sound themselves.
  5. Swap over and let them make the sounds for you.

Why this is good for them

Distinguishing between similar sounds is auditory discrimination, the same skill that lets a child later hear the difference between similar letter sounds. It is directly relevant to reading, and it costs nothing.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsVery distinct sounds only, and show them the object afterwards.
6 to 8 yearsMake two sounds in sequence and ask for both in the right order.

Keep it safe

Cleanup tip
