A five minute listening game that needs nothing and works in any room of the house.
What you need
Nothing at all.
How to do it
- They sit with eyes closed.
- Make a sound: crumple paper, tap a mug, zip a coat, pour water.
- They guess what it was.
- Give the real answer and let them try the sound themselves.
- Swap over and let them make the sounds for you.
Why this is good for them
Distinguishing between similar sounds is auditory discrimination, the same skill that lets a child later hear the difference between similar letter sounds. It is directly relevant to reading, and it costs nothing.
Adapting by age
2 to 3 yearsVery distinct sounds only, and show them the object afterwards.
6 to 8 yearsMake two sounds in sequence and ask for both in the right order.
