Write a list before you leave and the journey turns into a search instead of a countdown.

What you need

  • paper
  • pen

How to do it

  1. Before you leave, write a list of eight things you might see: a red door, a dog, a bridge, a tractor.
  2. Give each child their own list and a pen.
  3. They cross items off as they spot them.
  4. First to find five calls it out.
  5. Keep the list for the return journey and add three harder items.

Why this is good for them

Sustained visual searching is genuinely tiring for children, in a useful way, and it redirects attention outward rather than to a screen. Writing the list together beforehand is half the activity.

Adapting by age

3 to 5 yearsDraw the items instead of writing them.
8 to 12 yearsAdd point values, with rarer sightings worth more.

Keep it safe

Nothing needed beyond normal car rules.

Cleanup tip

None.
