Name a colour. They run. You sit down.

Call out a colour and they fetch something that matches. Needs nothing, works anywhere, and buys you a few minutes on the sofa.

What you need

Nothing at all.

How to do it

  1. Call out a colour: something red.
  2. They run to find an object that colour and bring it back.
  3. Name the object together and put it in a pile.
  4. Carry on through six or seven colours.
  5. At the end, sort the whole pile back into colour groups.

Why this is good for them

This links a word to a category and then to a physical object, which is exactly how vocabulary becomes durable. The running between rounds means it also works as an energy outlet rather than a sitting-still game.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsStick to four strong colours and accept anything close.
5 to 7 yearsAsk for something red and smaller than your hand, adding a second condition.

Keep it safe

Agree which rooms are out of bounds before you start.

Cleanup tip

The sorting round at the end doubles as tidying up.
