Turn an ordinary walk into a collecting mission, then sort what you found when you get home.

What you need

  • a paper or cloth bag

How to do it

  1. Give each child a bag before you leave the house.
  2. Agree a short list: something rough, something smooth, something smaller than your thumb.
  3. Walk your normal route, no further.
  4. At home, tip everything out and sort it by texture, colour or size.
  5. Choose the best three and put them on a windowsill.

Why this is good for them

Searching for a specific quality rather than just collecting turns a walk into focused observation. Sorting afterwards is early classification, which underpins both science and mathematics.

Adapting by age

2 to 4 yearsTwo categories only, and accept whatever they bring.
8 to 12 yearsAdd identification: name the tree each leaf came from.

Keep it safe

Agree not to pick from private gardens, avoid berries and mushrooms entirely, and wash hands afterwards.

Cleanup tip

Keep three treasures, compost the rest.
