A walk with a single, absurdly specific mission attached, which is all most children need.

What you need

Nothing at all.

How to do it

  1. Agree the criteria before you set off: it must be taller than your knee and lighter than a shoe.
  2. Walk your usual route, examining and rejecting sticks.
  3. Make them justify each rejection out loud.
  4. Choose one winner and bring it home.
  5. Give it a name and keep it by the door.

Why this is good for them

Applying a set of criteria and rejecting things that fail them is genuine evaluative thinking, and children will happily do it for a stick when they would refuse the same reasoning on paper. Saying why each one fails is the language work.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsOne criterion only: a stick you can carry.
8 to 12 yearsAdd a use: it must work as a walking pole, or a fishing rod for a game.

Keep it safe

No sticks near faces or eyes. Check for splinters and wash hands afterwards. Agree a carrying rule: point down, held at the middle.

Cleanup tip

Keep one, leave the rest where you found them.
