Hop, spin, tiptoe, jump. A chalk trail turns a driveway into a course they will run repeatedly.

What you need

  • pavement chalk

How to do it

  1. Draw a winding trail of footprints along a path or driveway.
  2. Add instructions along the way: hop here, spin twice, walk backwards.
  3. Draw a start and a finish clearly.
  4. Run it once together so the instructions make sense.
  5. Let them extend the trail themselves.

Why this is good for them

Reading a symbol and immediately converting it into a movement links decoding to action, which suits children who find sitting-down reading practice unbearable. The physical sequence also builds motor planning.

Adapting by age

2 to 3 yearsFootprints only, no written instructions.
8 to 12 yearsLet them design a course and time each other on it.

Keep it safe

Private driveways, paths and gardens only. Never near a road.

Cleanup tip

The next rain does it, or a watering can if they want it gone.
